Carondelet Catholic School and Christ the King parish is completing a summer construction project to restore the masonry and repair the roof of the school building at the Upper Campus. These updates and repairs will help to maintain a safe and welcoming place to learn, gather and serve together as a community. We appreciate your partnership and understanding during the construction timeframe.
Q: How did you discover the roof and exterior building needed repair?
A: In the fall of 2021, we discovered that a portion of the roof had experienced significant water damage through the failing tuck pointing in the 85-year-old brick and mortar. Through close examination of both the Christ the King and Carondelet spaces and continued discussions around priority updates, the school and church decided to proceed with the project. We engaged several builders and determined Maertens-Brenny is the right fit for the project.
Q: How long should we expect the project to take?
A: Construction will begin on June 10, 2024 and wrap up before the start of the school year in early September 2024.
Q: What will the impact be to students, staff and parishioners?
A: We anticipate the impact to be primarily related to parking. The shared lot for Carondelet and Christ the King lot will be significantly reduced. We advise any students or staff to use street parking, so parishioners will have priority parking in the remaining lot spots while students and staff will be asked to park along York and Zenith Streets. For our close neighbors on York, Zenith, and West 51st Streets, we expect there will be intermittent periods of construction noise along with an increase in street parking activity. We’ve also notified the surrounding homes of upcoming construction noise.
Q: How is the project being funded?
A: The primary funding source for this project is made possible by the endowment fund through Carondelet. Christ the King and Carondelet are partnering together to strategically leverage this fund to cover the costs of the exterior updates and repairs.
Q: Will any families or parishioners be asked to contribute?
A: Carondelet Catholic School will not be engaging in a fundraising campaign for this project nor will either Christ the King or Saint Thomas the Apostle. Parishioners of Christ the King will continue to make contributions as part of their ongoing stewardship to support the parish and its community ministries. In the same way, parishioners of Saint Thomas the Apostle will continue to make contributions as part of their ongoing stewardship. If anyone would like to support this project, they can reach out to Father Erich Rutten directly or please make note of the project as part of any CTK giving option outlined on the website. We will share plans to replenish the Carondelet endowment fund later this year.
